Terminology
- Green tile
- A tile in the exact correct position. It locks immediately and cannot be swapped again.
- Yellow tile
- A tile that belongs in one of its crossing words, but in a different position.
- Corner tile
- An intersection tile shared by both a horizontal and a vertical word.

1. Solve the four corners first
The four outer corners of the lattice are the highest-value real estate on the board. Each corner belongs to both an across word and a down word. When a corner tile turns green, it provides immediate structural constraints for two distinct words simultaneously. Never waste early swaps on middle edge tiles until the corners are locked in place.
2. Hunt for mutual two-for-one swaps
To beat par (10 moves), you must avoid one-sided swaps where only one letter turns green. Look across the board for pairs of letters that belong in each other's slots. If the top-left corner has an S that belongs on the bottom row, and the bottom row has a C that belongs in the top-left corner, swapping them turns both green in a single move.
3. Read yellow directional feedback
A yellow tile in Waffle indicates that the letter belongs in that specific row or column. In Pipstax's Easy mode, directional icons make this explicit: an equals-sign (=) indicates horizontal placement, while vertical bars (||) indicate the letter belongs in that column. Use this to restrict candidate words without guessing across the entire board.
4. Use common prefix and suffix patterns
Because every word in the standard 5x5 lattice is 5 letters long, standard 5-letter English word patterns dominate. Look for common beginnings (RE-, UN-, SH-, CH-) and endings (-ED, -ER, -LY, -TY). If a horizontal word starts with green T and ends with green E, test common patterns like THREE, TABLE, or TASTE against the available yellow and white tiles.
