How to Play

If you've played Wordle, you already know the rules. Pick a word length, then start guessing -- every guess lands on all four boards at once, solved ones included. The boards sit in a compact 2x2 layout, including on mobile. Turn on Sequence and the boards unlock one at a time instead, in order -- only the active board takes your guesses. You lose the shared-guess advantage, so Sequence gives you one extra guess to make up for it. After each guess, every tile is colored to show how close you got: green means the letter is correct and in the right spot, yellow means the letter is in the word but in the wrong spot, and gray means the letter isn't in the word at all. Use the on-screen keyboard or your own to type each guess. Performance is tracked separately by word length; Challenge rounds are excluded from official stats.

Game Modes & Features

Practice Mode, Not Just One a Day

Unlike the familiar one-game-a-day format, Practice Mode lets you play as many rounds as you want, whenever you want, at 4, 5, or 6 letters. Your progress for each length is saved automatically, so you can switch modes and pick up right where you left off.

A Word Guess for Every Length

Classic Wordle is always 5 letters. Here you can play the length that suits your mood -- Quartet gives you 4 extra attempts over the word length itself:

  • 4 letters - a quicker, easier warm-up round, with 8 attempts.
  • 5 letters - the familiar five-letter format, with 9 attempts.
  • 6 letters - a step up in difficulty with more letters to track, with 10 attempts.

Those counts are for Classic; turn on Sequence and the shared budget goes up by one guess at every length instead -- 9 at 4 letters, 10 at 5 letters, 11 at 6 letters.

Challenge a Friend

Finish a round and hit Challenge a Friend to generate a link. Anyone who opens it plays the exact same four-board round -- same length, same set of answers -- so the shared result compares like with like without revealing them in the link.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Quartet an unlimited word game?

Yep -- Practice has no daily cap, so you can keep playing fresh Quartet rounds whenever you want. Daily mode has one puzzle a day, with its own streak separate from Solo and Duet.

Are there hints if I get stuck?

There are. If a puzzle has you stuck, Get Hint opens a short chooser where you select an eligible board position and reveal its letter. Reveals stay on that board and never change your shared guess or keyboard feedback.

What is the best starting word to use?

Anything with a few vowels and the common consonants R, S, T, L, and N. STARE, CRANE, and AUDIO are all solid openers. If you want to go deeper on opening moves, our Word Game Strategy Hub has a full breakdown.

What is Sequence mode?

Sequence unlocks the four boards one at a time, in order, instead of all at once. Only the active board takes your guesses, and the others stay locked until it's solved. You get one extra guess to make up for it, since each guess now tells you about one word instead of four.
